I never understood the dangers of our chemical lifestyles until I saw this video, a prime motivator for me to develop healthy homes.
Back in 2009, Underwriters Laboratory (UL) conducted an experiment to evaluate the impact that different household furnishing materials have on time-to-flashover in a residential fire. The experiment involved the side-by-side comparison of two identically sized living rooms containing similar furnishings. One room contained natural materials typical of a 1950’s home while the other contained mainly synthetic materials found in a modern household.
When a fire burns, it consumes oxygen and generates toxic products of combustion (smoke). Oxygen levels decrease as the toxic smoke spreads through the house, and can quickly incapacitate a building occupant--even if remote from the fire room--way before flashover occurs. Watch and tell me: If this happened to you, would you have enough time to get your children out safely?
